Mrs Smith qualified as a social worker in 1975 and was employed by Glasgow City Council until retirement in October 2010. She held a number of posts in children and families and in 1991 took up her first management post within criminal justice services. She remained within the criminal justice field progressing to a number of senior management posts. As Principal Officer Criminal Justice Mrs Smith had lead responsibility for service development, service delivery and strategic planning. She was the lead officer for a number of services including the Glasgow Drug Court, 218 Service for women offenders and Structured Deferred Sentence Pilot. Inter-agency working with partners including the Strathclyde Police, Health, the Judiciary and the voluntary sector was integral to this work in delivering positive outcomes for offenders and in building safer communities. Mrs Smith was appointed to the Parole Board in November 2011.
