Mrs Crompton qualified as a solicitor in 1985 and worked in private practice for three years. She was appointed as a children's panel member in 1986 and served as a member for two years before stepping down in 1988 to take up appointment as a Reporter to the Children's Panel with Strathclyde Regional Council. Mrs Crompton's subsequent career has been within the Reporter's service, transferring to the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration (SCRA) when the service moved to a national structure in 1996. From 1996 to September 2011 she worked at SCRA's Head office in a number of roles, including senior operational roles. Her main areas of responsibility related to the audit of reporter practice, operational development and improvement of information exchanges with partner organisations, including police and social work. Mrs Crompton was appointed to the Parole Board in November 2011.
