Mrs McLaughlin has over 21 years of prosecution experience in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS). She was a front line prosecutor for several years in the West of Scotland and then dealt with the most serious cases from across Scotland including murder cases as Head of the High Court Unit at Crown Office before becoming Head of Policy for the Crown. She became a member of COPFS Management Board when she was appointed Area Procurator Fiscal for Grampian in 2005 covering all the COPFS offices across the North East of Scotland and from 2008 until May this year was Area Procurator Fiscal Lothian & Borders. Mrs McLaughlin was appointed to the Parole Board in November 2011.
